San Miguel looks to complete its redemption when it tries to eliminate the same team that denied it a championship last season while Ginebra looks to stop one of the conference dark horses on its track in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup.

The Beermen and the Kings are holding on to a twice-to-beat advantage although they are looking to make quick work of their quarterfinals foes in the quarterfinals double-header at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Friday, June 20.

The top seed SMB is facing up against the eighth seed and defending champion Meralco in the first offering at 5 p.m. before Ginebra locks horns with the dangerous Converge in the second game at 7:30 p.m.

Motivation is plenty for the Beermen heading into the contest as they are not only looking at making it back to the semifinals after missing out on the playoffs last conference but also to get some measure of revenge against Meralco by eliminating it in one game.

The Bolts defeated the Beermen in six games for the all-Filipino crown and that memory is surely still not lost to SMB main guns in CJ Perez and June Mar Fajardo.

“Yung dati, past na yun, pero we need to redeem ourselves also. Natalo kami nung Finals, pero sa effort naman namin, makakabawi kami,” said Perez who admitted that it would still be a tough task dispatching a team of the Bolts caliber.

“We need to focus sa Meralco. Manalo muna kami ng isa, then we’ll see kung anong mangyayari.They have a good system, so kailangan naming tapatan energy nila, mag-focus sa defense, then offense will come na lang,” he added.

Though Meralco ended its elimination schedule early, the Bolts should be looking sharp after a stint in the Basketball Champions League Asia where they reached as far as the quarterfinals and was actually only a few stops away from making it to the semis.

They've been playing well. It's gonna be a good matchup. I'm looking at the way their games are being played now... it's a different San Miguel. They're playing the most consistent basketball, that's why they're No. 1, noted Trillo whose Meralco dropped a 98-110 decision in their elims matchup.

For the part of Ginebra, meanwhile, head coach Tim Cone wants his wards to not think of any sort of advantage heading into the quarters matchup against Converge.

Bottomline is we're just going to prepare ourselves and try to go out and just win one game. That's really what we're thinking about, one game, not twice-to-beat. We're just thinking about one game and winning that, said Cone.

While that is the goal, it would be easier said than done with the FiberXers not expected to easily fold against the crowd darlings especially with their capable players in Justin Arana, Justine Baltazar, Alec Stockton and Schonny Winston leading the charge.
