Index crimes in Metro Manila went down by eight percent in a 17-day period since Gen. Nicolas Torre III assumed the post of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on June 2, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said on Thursday, June 19.
NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin said the eight percent drop was recorded during the comparison of the Eight Focus Crimes between the May 16 to June 1 period and June 2 to 18 period.
From 270 during the May 16 to June 1 period, Aberin said the Eight Focus Crimes decreased to 247 during the June 2 to 18 period.
The Eight Focus Crimes are murder, homicide, physical injury and rape or crimes against persons; and, robbery, theft, carnapping and motorcycle theft, or crimes against property.
Among the specific crime categories, Aberin said rape cases declined from 28 to 18, homicide from 41 to 31, and robbery from 43 to 34.
Among all police districts in the National Capital Region, the Northern Police District (NPD) recorded the most significant decrease in focus crimes, with total incidents dropping from 56 to 29 during the second period.
“This outstanding performance underscores the effectiveness of localized crime prevention strategies supported by strong leadership and close coordination with the community,” said Aberin.
“But while there is a decrease in index crimes, the objective of the Chief PNP is to go beyond statistics, and ensure that the swift and responsive service of the PNP will translate to a genuine feeling of safety and security of the people. This will be the anchor of our actions and our ultimate direction,” he added.
