DepEd allows Kanlaon evacuees to use classrooms at night in La Castellana
BACOLOD CITY – The Department of Education (DepEd) has allowed Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by Kanlaon Volcano to stay in classrooms at night in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, provided it does not interfere with regular class schedules.

DepEd-Negros Occidental Administrative Officer V, Jasper Tadeo Tuala, said in a media interview on Wednesday, June 18, that IDPs can stay in classrooms overnight but must return to their tents during the day to ensure classrooms are available for students.
This arrangement was approved following consultations on Tuesday, June 17, between local officials and DepEd in response to the request of La Castellana Mayor Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan to use classrooms for humanitarian reasons.
“They found the request reasonable since the IDPs have nowhere else to go,” said Tuala though he was unsure whether the policy has been implemented as of yet.
These IDPs are those who were relocated to different sites and have been occupying tents after they have been decamped from school-based evacuation centers since last week to give way for the resumption of face-to-face classes in the town.
Tuala said that elementary and high school classes usually end between 4 to 5 p.m. and students, some from far-flung areas, start arriving as early as 5:30 a.m. We just have to make sure that classes will not be hampered, he said.
He stressed that face-to-face classes must continue daily, with some extending to Saturdays to compensate for lost instructional hours due to schedule adjustments.
Last week, some IDPs from Barangays Sag-ang, Mansalanao, Masulog, Biak na Bato, and Cabagna-an were relocated from school-based evacuation centers to safer sites.
Some evacuees from Barangay Cabagna-an are now temporarily staying at the La Castellana National High School-Senior High School Covered Court, a vacant school building, the Colegio de La Castellana Covered Court, and the Municipal Evacuation Center.
Earlier, DepEd-Negros Occidental, said that only four schools in La Castellana with students within the six-kilometer danger zone of Kanlaon Volcano remain affected, impacting around 600 to 800 learners. Temporary learning spaces are being set up to ensure education continues.
Tuala added that DepEd has prepared contingency plans, including a possible shift to alternative learning modalities in case the volcano erupts.
The Office of Civil Defense-NIR reported that 12 vacant classrooms at La Castellana National High School-Senior High School are being occupied by IDPs, while 11 classrooms at the junior high school are currently available for IDPs, while tents are being set up in Masulog Extension in Barangay Cabacungan.
