During his visit at the Flora Ylagan High School in Quezon City on Thursday, June 19, Marcos once again promised students and teachers in the country that the government is working towards increasing the number of schools equipped with free WiFi connection.
“Pararamihin pa natin ito (We will increase this further, especially GIDA areas (geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas), Marcos said as he virtually met with schools around the country that recently gained connectivity.
Among the schools Marcos virtually met were in Batanes, Bulacan, Quezon Province, Marinduque, Camarines Sur, Cebu, Tawi-Tawi, Misamis Occidental, Surigao del Norte, and Apayao.
“We're working towards 100 percent connectivity by the end of the year,” he reaffirmed.
According to Marcos, schools that have access to the internet in the country are currently at 60 percent. He cited the issue of power supply as among the challenges in providing internet services to schools.
The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) are implementing the project that aims to bridge the digital divide in public schools, particularly those in underserved areas.
