Popular entertainment journalist-producer Ogie Diaz thanked the guests who were thrilled by the drama film How to Get Away From My Toxic Family, which was screened in the Philippines for the first time on June 17.
KreativDen Entertainment co-produced the heavy drama under OgieD Productions, which explores the toxicity within the family. It stars Zanjoe Marudo, Susan Africa, Richard Quan, Sherry Lara, and Nonie Buencamino.
Before it was screened in the Philippines, the movie made its debut in Los Angeles, California, and Japan. The film opens exclusively at SM Cinemas nationwide on July 30. Ogie urged viewers who have seen the movie not to spoil it for others.
Please don't spoil the movie's ending. So that ma-experience riin nila bakit marami ang pumupuri sa movie. (So that they can experience why so many people are praising the film), Ogie said during the Q&A portion of the movie on Tuesday.
Modesty aside, Ogie said his project received good reviews from those who have seen it. The movie is also Zanjoe's comeback after a two-year hiatus.
Asked to choose between box-office results and awards, Ogie preferred the movie to earn money.
Box office success. Ngayon kasi ang dami-dami ng award-giving body hindi mo alam paano sila nagsimula. Hindi mo alam ano ang pinaghugutan nila at bigla na lang sumulpot ang award-giving body na yun. (Box office. Now there are so many award-giving bodies, you don't know how they started. You don't know how they originated and they just appeared), Ogie said.
He added: Box office (ang pipiliin ko) para marami pa tayong mai-produce at matulungan na box office people na walang trabaho. I will choose box office so that we can produce more and help the unemployed.)
(I'm not saying you should praise the movie. If you like it, you can write about it or vlog it. Or if you don't like it, you can write about it after a week), Ogie added.
But what made the small crowd laugh during the press conference was when Ogie answered actress Bea Alonzo for Zanjoe.
It would be recalled that Bea and Zanjoe were in a relationship several years ago, but they broke up. But now Zanjo is happily married to Ria Atayde, while Bea is rumored to be in a relationship with Puregold President Vincent Co.
At the press conference, Zanjoe and Ogie were asked: Has there ever been a moment na masyado na kayong stuck in a toxic situation?
Ogie answered and smiled: Ay tungkol kay Bea yata yan! (I think it's about Bea.)
Zanjoe and the crowd were surprised at Ogie's answer. The audience then laughed heartily about it.
Someone in the crowd said: Masaya na s'ya. (She's happy now), apparently referring to Bea's love life these days.
Ogie also said that the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) gave the movie a Parental Guidance (PG) rating.
(We went to the MTRCB for review of the movie and were given a PG. When they came out after screening, they still couldn't move on. They said the curse of Arsenio (played by Zanjoe) was not good enough. You could really understand why he blew his top off in the end), the showbiz journalist added.
Ogie said some people who have seen the movie suggested it should have been entered as an official entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival. He answered: Okay na kami sa July 30 na play date. At saka iba ang labanan sa MMFF. (We're okay with the July 30 play date. It's tough at the MMFF.)
