Mayor Baste backs Councilor Rigo Duterte II, who could become acting vice mayor

DAVAO CITY – Davao City Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte strongly supports Councilor-elect Rodrigo “Rigo” Duterte II as the city anticipates significant shifts in its local political landscape next month.
Rigo, the son of first district Rep. Paolo Duterte, is expected to become acting vice mayor if former President Rodrigo Duterte cannot take his oath as mayor.

The elder Duterte is still detained at the International Criminal Court at The Hague following his arrest on March 11 for alleged crimes against humanity during the campaign against illegal drugs under his leadership.
In such scenario, Mayor Duterte would likely return to Davao City’s top post, ensuring continuity in leadership amid growing public interest and speculation.
Speaking to the local media on Tuesday, Mayor Duterte said he has confidence in the younger Duterte’s character, describing him as “kind-hearted” and well-intentioned.
However, the mayor also underscored the weight of responsibility that comes with public service here.
“I am confident in Rigo. He is a good person. But he should be ready to learn quickly. The demands of the people of Davao City are not easy,” Mayor Duterte said in a local dialect.
While open to offering guidance, Mayor Duterte said Rigo must find his footing. He said he could advise his nephew, which is entirely up to him.
As the city faces potential political realignments, he thanked the people of Davao for their enduring support for the Duterte family and their firm stance against money-driven politics.
“Thank you for your trust in our family and our party. Thank you for not giving in to politics that only revolve around money,” the city mayor said.
