Marantan seeks relief as Davao City top cop

DAVAO CITY – Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte on Tuesday weighed in on the sudden request for relief submitted by Davao City Police Office acting director Police Col. Hansel Marantan.

Marantan cited medical reasons for seeking reassignment.
He appeared before the city council session on Tuesday morning for a formal exit courtesy call.
Marantan confirmed that he has filed a request for relief with the Philippine National Police headquarters on Friday, June 13.
“I’m in pain and have several medical issues I need to deal with. There are 52 metal implants in my body. I’ve had a full knee replacement and have a titanium spine. I’m considered a Person with a Disability, and I believe it’s time to take care of my condition,” Marantan said.
Marantan’s departure added to the growing list of brief tenures in the top law enforcement post here.
“Chaos all over again. I’m used to it,” Mayor Duterte said in a press conference, reflecting his frustration with the recurring changes in police leadership.
Mayor Duterte assured residents that the city remains resilient and unified despite the challenges. He said he believes there is an end to everything.
“We, Davaoeños, are known for our resilience. Stay vigilant and united,” Mayor Duterte said.
He said Marantan’s exit comes as Davao City faces significant political and security leadership changes.
Mayor Duterte emphasized the need for the next DCPO director to uphold the city’s longstanding values of discipline, efficiency, and public trust, principles deeply rooted since the administration of former President and longtime Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
As the PNP prepares to name Marantan’s replacement, Mayor Duterte called for stability and accountability within the force. He stressed that Davao’s reputation for security must remain intact regardless of leadership changes.
The PNP is expected to release its decision within 15 days following the request for relief filed by Marantan, who also submitted a leave of absence while waiting for the decision.
Marantan, who served as DCPO chief for 11 months, highlighted key accomplishments under his leadership, including a 100 percent crime solution rate, no reported terrorist activity, and peaceful, violence-free elections in this city.
He also emphasized the success of community outreach programs initiated by the DCPO, particularly in remote barangays.
The Davao City Council acknowledged Marantan’s contributions and passed a resolution commending him and the entire DCPO for their commitment to maintaining peace and security here.
