De Brito set for coaching debut for Capital1 in PVL on Tour opener

Jorge de Brito assured that he will be on the sidelines to guide his new club Capital1 when it tackles Creamline in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) on Tour opener this Sunday, June 22, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
Following a silver medal finish with Alas Pilipinas Women in Vietnam, De Brito will make his coaching debut after his appointment earlier this month as the chief tactician of the Solar Spikers, who was formerly handled by veteran mentor and now team’s consultant Roger Gorayeb.
“It’s me. I’ll be there, I’m going there on Friday after the practice with the national team, I will join the team (Capital1) against Creamline,” said de Brito. “I’ll be there for sure.”
Aside from de Brito, Bella Belen also makes her first appearance as a Solar Spiker and as a professional player this season after a fruitful run in her collegiate and high school days as the top hitter of the National University Lady Bulldogs.
The No. 1 overall pick will join her fellow rookies in Pia Abbu and Ivy Aquino, who were key pieces in their respective campaigns with University of Santo Tomas and Asian Institute of Maritime Studies, respectively.
They battle the Cool Smashers at 6:30 p.m., going after the 4 p.m. clash of the Akari Chargers and Cignal HD Spikers.
“Never been the problem being the coaching of the club, since the guys follow the calendar, it’s really okay and it’s also good, being in the national team, you work with the guys from different teams, skills,” de Brito continued.
“But I also have to bring the level for all the teams, I help because I can still also help the PVL, our best league, and I always wanted to be part of the best always,” he added.
It was the second PVL stint for de Brito, an Olympic gold medalist with Team Brazil in 1992 Barcelona, after his first with Akari in the 2022-23 season where he resigned.
Give Belen the best environment, says de Brito
Since 2014, Belen has been tied up with the NU system and a new system could be challenging for her.
“Well it’s my challenge to keep her focus on her career to improve and also to help the team, I think we’ll try to give the best environment for her to go as a player in the team and as a leader also,” said de Brito.
“It's kind of a big change for her also, not only changing in UAAP… but also to be a pro, [having] the exposure with the national team for long… she has to lead the team and she has the potential to do that,” she added.
With her new journey, the three-time UAAP MVP vowed to give her best for Capital1 which is aiming for its first podium win in the country’s biggest pro volleyball league.
