NLEX and Magnolia aim to quickly finish off their quarterfinals foes in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup playoffs at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City on Wednesday, June 18.
The Road Warriors, who surprisingly finished as the second seed at the end of the eliminations, are looking to dispatch the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the first offering at 5 p.m.
The Hotshots also try to do the same when they face up against the Grand Slam-seeking TNT Tropang 5G in the main event at 7:30 p.m.
Both NLEX and Magnolia are armed with a twice-to-beat incentive, an advantage they hope to not be put to use especially against dangerous opponents in ROS and TNT, two teams that had reached the semifinals of the last two conferences.
Though they finished at the bottom four of the Magic 8 in the standings, both ROS and TNT are proven to be capable and have enough tools to push their respective quarterfinals pairing to a do-or-die Game 2.
NLEX and Magnolia, however, enjoy some sort of psychological advantage after once beating their quarters opponents in the eliminations.
The Road Warriors, behind a career-best effort of Xyrus Torres, took down the then debuting Elasto Painters, 109-95.
The emergence of Torres, along with other young players like JB Bahio and Brandon Ramirez have taken a weight off Robert Bolick's shoulders and made NLEX less predictable.
Interestingly, that somewhat resembled the same blueprint ROS has been employing with players like Jhonard Clarito, Santi Santillan, Gian Mamuyac, Andrei Caracut and Adrian Nocum all capable of exploding at any given night.
Meanwhile, the last clash between Magnolia and TNT should still be fresh on their minds as it was their last assignment in the playoffs.
The Hotshots, behind a blistering 16-0 run bridging the third and final quarters, took down the Tropang 5G, 88-83.
That win had serious implications on how the final pairings pan out with Magnolia clinching the twice-to-beat incentive while slamming the door on TNT's top 4 bid.
For the Hotshots they aim to prove that their elims victory over the Tropang 5G was no fluke. TNT, on the other hand, should be eager to get back at the same team that put its bid for a grand slam in peril in the playoffs.
