Coach Jorge Souza de Brito aims to keep the current Alas Pilipinas Women roster when it competes in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand this December.
Coming off from a breakthrough silver-medal finish in the 2025 AVC Women's Volleyball Nations Cup in Vietnam, De Brito sees no reason to change the lineup as they prepare for the biennial meet against the region's powerhouse squads.
“We’re ready with 25 players, we’re trying to keep this 25 as well, until we identified for SEA Games,” said de Brito during during Tuesday’s PSA Forum which is presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, Smart/ PLDT, and the countrys’ 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus.
“So we’re hoping, but this 25 this season are the players we want to keep,” he added.
De Brito, an Olympic gold medalist with Brazil, believes that Philippine volleyball is on the right track for a bright future and the best is yet to come after a stellar display on Vietnamese soil.
“Of course, we’re going to fight for this, we know each other, we played with pride, and it’s gonna be hard but we’re going to work for it,” de Brito continued. “One I can say to our team, we’re just starting the process, the best is yet to come.”
The Philippines won its last SEAG medal – a silver – in the distaff side’s volleyball event in the 1997 Jakarta, Indonesia edition. Four years prior, the spikers ruled the tournament in Singapore where it stunned Thailand.
From there, Thailand and Vietnam became perennial contenders for the title, with the former winning 14 consecutive gold medals in the regional showpiece.
Team skipper De Guzman is hopeful the country would break the bad spell come the December SEAG.
“Since past is past, what do we do now, diba? Moving forward, we keep sticking to the program, because if we do, I have no doubts that one day we’ll reach that level also,” said De Guzman.
“Hindi naman ibig sabihin na like nauuna sila, hindi na sila mahahabol… they recognized the Philippines is growing, we have to take advantage of that because they considered as a threat,” she added.
The Filipina hitters will plunge back into action in the 2025 VTV International Women's Volleyball Cup in Vĩnh Phúc, Vietnam later this month then the SEA V League in the following weeks.
