The Taguig City government held the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day to remember those who lost their lives to the condition.
It also recognized ongoing efforts in HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) prevention and treatment, and emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing HIV and AIDS-related challenges.
AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) “occurs at the most advanced stage of infection,” according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
In a Facebook post, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano said HIV testing in the city is safe. To show that the testing was safe, the mayor underwent testing at the Taguig Social Hygiene Clinic & Drop-In Center.
“We know ourselves best. Hindi na kailangan maghintay ng sintomas. If you had participated in a high-risk behavior such as having unprotected sexual contact and having multiple sexual partners, mahalaga na alam mo ang iyong health status, magpatest na! (There is no need to wait for symptoms. If you had participated in a high-risk behavior such as having unprotected sexual contact and having multiple sexual partners, it is important that you know your health status, get tested now!),” she said.
From January to March this year, the Department of Health recorded 5,101 new HIV-positive individuals, an increase of 50 percent compared to the same period last year.
Of the total, 1,251 cases (25 percent) were recorded in the National Capital Region followed by 905 (18 percent) in Region IV-A, 554 (11 percent) in Region III, 306 (six percent) in Region XI, and 257 (five percent) in Region VI.
In the first quarter of the year, 145 people with HIV died in the country, a decrease of 52 percent compared to the same period last year.
From January 1984 to March 2025, there were 148,831 reported HIV cases in the Philippines.
Cayetano said in 2018, she signed her pledge for the Paris Declaration to Fast Track Cities Initiative that aimed at ending AIDS through strengthening local efforts.
She said the HIV testing center in Taguig was established in 2014. Recently, the DOH recognized Taguig as having the most number of people who underwent HIV screening in a week in the National Capital Region.
