Mayor Narciso Javelosa Jr., Vice Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva, and Negros Occidental second district Rep. Alfredo Marañon III led the unveiling of the two-story building in Barangay Old Sagay on Wednesday, June 11.
The building has eight commercial blocks, 26 fish stalls, seven meat stalls, 12 vegetable stalls, and three comfort rooms on the first floor.
The second floor has 11 stalls designed for cafes and restaurants and also has comfort rooms.
The project has a materials recovery facility (MRF), a sewage treatment plant, and a water system.
Despite setbacks from challenges with informal settlers and resolving boundaries, City Engineer Jezreel Alingco thanked officials for realizing the project.
Barangay Old Sagay Captain Rogelio Sayam thanked local officials for constructing a unique structure in their barangay and expressed hope that it will further boost the local economy.
Javelosa presented the project, outlining its purpose and urged prospective vendors and sellers to ensure its care and maintenance.
Cueva also thanked Marañon for facilitating one of the barangay's most vital infrastructures, especially as it serves as a gateway to the Sagay Marine Reserve.
He said that additional structures are slated for completion, including improvements for accessibility for Persons with Disability (PWDs) and the elderly.
The city has also invested in improving the Bago Public Market and other major markets.
