In the service of small dreams

FROM THE MARGINS
Microfinance workers do not often make headlines, but every day, they are in the trenches of transformation, working quietly to bring dignity, opportunity, and hope to those too often left behind.
Their mission is not measured in profits, but in lives changed — a farmer no longer beholden to loan sharks, a mother who becomes the breadwinner, a family that finally has a roof that doesn’t leak. In a world where grand ambitions steal the spotlight, microfinance workers champion the small dreams that fuel resilience, self-reliance, and lasting change. This article is another tribute to their unwavering commitment to poverty reduction, financial inclusion, and the empowerment of women — a mission pursued not with fanfare, but with faith.
Shiela Cañete
At just 30 years old, Shiela Grace Cañete carries nearly a decade of dedication to the mission of microfinance. As the unit manager of CARD SME Bank’s Talamban Unit in Cebu City, Shiela leads with quiet strength—a quality shaped by years of struggles, hope, and hard work.
The third of six siblings, Shiela learned early what it meant to make do with little. She worked to fund her education even while supporting her family. In 2015, she proudly became the first in her family to graduate from college.
Her introduction to CARD was personal—her mother was a member. Encouraged by CARD staff to apply, Shiela began her journey as an account officer in 2015. From Lapu-Lapu to Cordova to Liloan, and now Talamban, she rose through the ranks, promoted to unit manager in 2021.
In her early days, Shiela often sent home most of her salary, forgetting to save for herself. Her supervisor taught her the value of budgeting—one of many life lessons she attributes to CARD. From a shy young woman, she grew into a confident leader, learning to face criticism and exhaustion with resilience. “There were days we worked until dawn, and it hurt when some members saw us merely as loan collectors rather than development workers,” she recalls. “But we remained steadfast in our mission.”
With gratitude, she shares how her job helped rebuild their home, fund her wedding, support her siblings’ education—and now, her dream is to send her eldest sister to college. “I owe this to CARD. The work is difficult, but the reward is greater.”
Her advice? “Value your work. It may be hard, but it gives life—not just to others, but to you.”
Mark Jerald San Jose
Sometimes, a simple calendar can change the course of a life. Mark Jerald San Jose, then a contractual worker in Pililla, Rizal, visited a friend’s house and saw the calendar of Ahon sa Hirap, Inc. (ASHI). Reading its mission to uplift poor Filipino families, he felt an instant pull. “I want to be part of this,” he thought, so in 2014, he joined ASHI as a development officer.
What he found was the complete opposite of the degrading experiences he faced in previous jobs. In ASHI, members respectfully called him “Sir,” and for the first time, he felt truly seen—as a professional, and as someone making a difference.
Now branch manager of the Rizal COGEO Branch, Mark leads a team of six staff serving over 1,000 clients with a perfect 100 percent repayment rate. But it wasn’t always this way. When he first arrived, the branch was struggling with ₱8.5 million in past-due loans. Sleepless nights and self-doubt followed, but he held on. “I had to innovate and find ways to connect with members—to understand their needs and ensure their loans were used well. When they feel cared for, they won’t let you down.”
He also poured his energy into mentoring his young staff, observing their behavior, coaching them into alignment with ASHI’s mission. Within six months, his branch reached zero past-due loans—a turnaround born from empathy, persistence, and shared purpose.
Though his work demands much, Mark finds balance in intimate moments with family. “ASHI gave me a chance not just to grow, but to lift my own family out of poverty,” he reflects. “The stories of our nanay clients? They’re my story too.”
The stories of Shiela and Mark illustrate that microfinance is not merely about loans or savings; it is about dignity, opportunity, and the belief that even the smallest dreams are worth fighting for.
Microfinance does not only transform the lives of clients—it uplifts the lives of those who serve them, building a ripple of change that reaches far beyond numbers. In every rural barangay, on every dirt road walked, lives are being rebuilt—not with grand gestures, but with daily acts of care, commitment, and courage. This is the power of microfinance. This is the promise of serving small dreams.
