Senators Risa Hontiveros, Koko Pimentel, Nancy Binay, Sherwin Gatchalian, and Grace Poe didn't show bias when they--as senator-judges--voted to against returning Vice President Sara Duterte's articles of impeachment to the House of Representatives.
House impeachment prosecutor, San Juan City lone district Rep. Ysabel Maria Zamora made this assertion Monday, June 16 on the issue of whether or not certain senator-judges should be inhibited from Vice President Duterte's impeachment trial.
May take on that is that Senator Hontiveros or even the four others who voted against the motion to remand, these five senator-judges have not shown any bias against the Vice President, Zamora told House reporters in an interview.
What I believe that they have shown is adherence to the Constitution and to the Senate impeachment rules, noted Zamora.
Hontiveros, Pimentel, Binay, Gatchalian, and Poe opposed last week the controversial motion to send back the impeachment articles to its origin, the House of Representatives.
It's controversial because it stemmed from a motion of a fellow senator-judge in Ronald Bato dela Rosa. Originally, Dela Rosa--a known ally of rhe Duterte family wanted to dismiss the impeachment case outright, without the conduct of the trial.
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano had Dela Rosa's motion amended so that the articles of impeachment would simply be remanded. The motion won via vote of 18-5 (yes-no).
Just because they voted against that motion to remand does not mean that they are against the Vice President, Zamora said of the five senators who entered negative votes.
The 1987 Constitution mandates that the Senate impeachment court carry out a trial forwith upon receipt of the impeachment articles. The House submitted these back on Feb. 5, over four months ago.
The seven articles of impeachment against Duterte are as follows:
Article 1: Conspiracy to assassinate President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez;
Article 2: Malversation of P612.5 million in confidential funds;
Article 3: Bribery and corruption in Department of Education (DepEd);
Article 4: Unexplained wealth and failure to disclose assets;
Article 5: Involvement in extrajudicial killings (EJK);
Article 6: Destabilization, insurrection, and public disorder; and
Article 7: The totality of respondent's conduct as Vice President.
