Vice President Sara Duterte said she was shocked by an idea being floated by Senator Robin Padilla of her and Senator Imee Marcos running in tandem for president and vice president, respectively, in the 2028 national elections.

In a media interview in Davao City, the Vice President shared that she first heard about it during Padilla’s speech in Malaysia. Padilla and Marcos accompanied Duterte during a personal trip in Kuala Lumpur, where she also attended the Independence Day celebrations and met overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
“Una ko nadinig yan kay Senator Robin Padilla at nagulat din ako dahil dun ko nadinig nagtatalumpati siya sa stage sa Malaysia at pagkakaintindi ko dun ay nagbibiro siya (I first heard that from Senator Robin Padilla and I was surprised when I heard it during a speech on stage in Malaysia and my understanding is that he was joking),” she recalled.
Padilla said that he will be the campaign manager of the Duterte-Marcos tandem in 2028, though other factions of the Duterte group is eyeing a Duterte-Padilla tandem instead owing to the presidential sister’s relationship with President Marcos.
But the Vice President clarified that it should be up to Padilla to explain why he made such a remark.
“Pero ang tama na tao mag explain niyan ay si Senator Robin Padilla at kung bakit nya nasabi yun (The right person to explain that is Senator Robin Padilla and why he said that),” she said.
Duterte had never explicitly denied or confirmed her plans to run as president in 2028, but many of her allies have accused the Marcos administration of trying to derail an eventual win by impeaching her and throwing accusations at her.
Meanwhile, the Vice President also said that while the recommended plunder and perjury charges against her by the House of Representatives mean nothing to her, she worries about her staff at the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education (DepEd).
“Kung ako okay lang dahil pulitiko ako, alam ko kung ano ang kailangan ko gawin at gusto ko din sumagot sa loob ng korte. Pero naawa ako dahil sa mga threats, harassment na ito may mga empleyado ng ating opisina na nadadamay, na hindi naman kailangan madamay (It’s okay for me since I’m a politician, I know what to do and I also want to face this in court. But I pity those employees in our office who got embroiled in this because of the threats and harassment they receive),” she explained.
She cited what Marcos earlier said that the threats, harassment, and even the impeachment complained against her were just “glorified disqualification” because of the 2028 elections.
On Tuesday, the lower chamber adopted the committee report of the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability that recommended the filing of cases against Duterte and other officials over alleged technical malversation, perjury, bribery and plunder in relation to the supposed misuse of confidential funds in the OVP and DepEd.
