A taxi was severely damaged after a container fell onto its roof from a trailer truck that struck a footbridge along Abad Santos Avenue in Manila shortly after midnight on Saturday, June 14.
In a CCTV footage captured the moment when the taxi was about to turn left onto Recto Avenue around 12 a.m. when a passing trailer truck struck a footbridge, causing its container to fall directly onto the taxi.
Although the container was empty, the impact was strong enough to crush the vehicle’s roof.
The taxi driver, 60-year-old Lito Sinco, had just dropped off his passengers and was on his way home to Taytay, Rizal when the incident occurred.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel arrived at the scene around 2 a.m. and immediately closed off the area while attempting to lift the container back onto the truck.
Both the trailer truck driver and Sinco were brought to the Manila District Traffic Enforcement Unit for investigation.
According to their initial statements to authorities, the truck had passed through the same route before without incident.
They suspect that the newly laid asphalt may have raised the road level slightly, causing the container to hit the footbridge.
