The Philippine government must be ready to bring back home overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Israel and Iran as the two countries continue to exchange airstrikes.
“The government must stand ready to swiftly and safely repatriate our OFWs in Iran and Israel should the armed conflict escalate,” Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian said.
Government officials should also include Filipino migrant workers from Iraq as part of their emergency repatriation efforts.
“OFWs in Iraq must also be included in contingency efforts, especially as the country hosts Iran-backed militias and could be drawn into regional tensions,” he pointed out.
According to the senator, compatriots in these areas deserve immediate and comprehensive support such as livelihood assistance and health services, including mental health care.
“Siguruhin nating ligtas ang bawat Pilipino sa Iran, Israel, at Iraq (Let’s make sure that each Filipino in Iran, Israel, and Iraq are safe),” he said.
“Tungkulin ng gobyerno na pangalagaan ang kanilang seguridad at proteksyon (The government has the right to ensure their security and protection),” the lawmaker stressed.
Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega earlier said that while the Philippines is not deploying Filipino workers in Iran, the government is still keen on ensuring the safety of the Filipinos living in the foreign country.
According to De Vega, there are about 4,000 Filipinos in Iran and Iraq.
De Vega said they Philippine embassy in Iraq has also issued an advisory to Filipinos there, considering the possibility of Iraq being Israel’s next target.
Nevertheless, he said Philippine embassies in Iraq, Iran and Israel are ready to provide shelter to Filipinos who may be affected by the attacks.
