Ian Arnold Arnaez, spokesperson for the Negros Occidental DepEd Schools Division, said that enrollment has been extended beyond the official cut-off on June 13 to cater more students, including transferees.
“The enrollment will continue because we cannot deny any learners. They will be accommodated beyond June 13, provided these students could attend 80 percent of class days for the whole school year,” he added.
Arnaez said that an enrollment deadline was initially set to enable schools to consolidate the data that will be needed for budget allocation.
He said that the schools under the division have enough classrooms.
“Schools are prepared for the class opening on Monday (June 16). The problems depend on every school, and school heads have already thought of remedies to address challenges along the way,” Arnaez said.
He said that in case of overcrowding, schools implement shifting of classes, while other difficulties are case-to-case basis. He assured that there are plans to address the potential difficulties.
The division also covers 111 private schools in the province.
Arnaez said that only four schools in La Castellana, Negros Occidental within the six-kilometer danger zone near Kanlaon Volcano will remain affected of the in-person classes, projecting about 600 to 800 displaced learners.
He said that temporary learning spaces will be established to ensure continued education of affected learners.
Some school-based evacuation centers in the town can resume regular classes as the municipal government started the decamping of evacuees recently.
The decampment of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in La Castellana, as of Friday involved 463 individuals from Barangay Mansalanao and 214 individuals from Barangay Sag-ang.
The provincial government provided buses to transport the IDPs from evacuation schools to their designated relocation sites.
Personnel from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) assisted in the decampment operations.
Sakolins were turned over to the La Castellana Incident Management Team (IMT). Additionally, 50 modular tents were distributed to Barangays Mansalanao and Biak na Bato, while 30 modular tents were provided to Barangay Masulog.
A generator set, along with a substantial supply of fuel, was also delivered to Masulog High School Extension.
