University of the East (UE) on Saturday, June 14, clarified reports regarding the status of its women’s volleyball team, saying that the non-renewal of its sponsor and several leadership changes resulted the large-scale revamp.
In a statement, the university said “much of the information being circulated is inaccurate” and stressed that Strong Group Athletics decided not to renew its sponsorship after UAAP Season 87.
With the development, the coaching staff under the sponsor’s support also ended their tenure with the team.
The university also appointed new coaches for the team upon approval of the President and as consulted from the UE sports committee. As such, an tryout was held to evaluate potential and existing players.
“A meeting was held by the PE Director for the old member players of the team before the hour of the tryout, its reason of conduct of restructuring the team, reminded them to show their skills and dominance to be retained,” the statement read.
“Furthermore, the University has long-standing policy of conduction a tryout at the end of every season in preparation for the next one,” it added.
The team vowed to continue its support to the student-athletes and its program in the future, noting its goal of bringing the students to excellence and pride on and off the court.
“Looking ahead, UE remains firmly committed to supporting its student-athletes and to building a competitive, values-driven sports program,” it said.
“Our ultimate goal is to empower our athletes to grow not only in their sport but also as student leaders, and to bring pride and honor to the University through excellence in the UAAP,” it concluded.
The UE Lady Warriors finished Season 87 without a single victory in all their 14 matches.
