CHR bolsters youth's views on human rights, justice, dignity

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said it has renewed its partnership with Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) Philippines to spearhead new initiatives on the promotion and protection of human rights, justice, and dignity among the youth.
In a statement, the CHR said a Partner Agreement with FNF, a group based in Germany with partners in more than 60 countries, was signed last June 9.
Based on its website, FNF “promotes democracy, human rights, economic freedom, and curbing climate change.” It also states that the foundation “focuses on open and digital society, as well as a social market economy.”
The CHR said its Caraga Regional Office will lead the third installment of the Tertiary Student Leaders Confab, which will bring together higher education institutions to deepen student leaders’ appreciation of human rights.
It also said the agreement will also support the establishment of Centers for Human Rights Education within these institutions to serve as sustainable platforms for rights education.
A Civil Society Conference will be conducted to unite civil society organizations in identifying prevailing human rights and gender issues in the region, and in fostering stronger collaborative networks, it added.
At the same time, the CHR said the agreement with FNF will enable the CHR Region IV-A Office to conduct comprehensive human rights education programs for the benefit of youth leaders. These initiatives, it also said, will provide mentorship on human rights, including gender and children’s rights.
It said that barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials will be invited to participate in mentoring sessions and complete modules on human rights-based approaches to leadership.
It also said: For over three decades, the Commission has stood as the country’s national institution for the promotion and protection of human rights. We have witnessed the evolution of our democracy, the challenges that test our resolve, and the triumphs that remind us why this work matters.”
“Through it all, we have learned that human rights education and capacity building at the grassroots level are fundamental to creating lasting change in our society,” said CHR Chairperson Richard Palpal-latoc of the partnership.
In 2023 and 2024, the CHR and the FNF have worked on activities geared towards press freedom and capacity building on digital privacy.
