CEBU CITY – The stunning victory of philantrophist Pamela Baricuatro will be celebrated in a thanksgiving and victory rally a day before she assumes as the new governor of Cebu province.
The event slated June 29 will not only celebrate the victory of Baricuatro but also the triumph of the senatorial candidates who ran under the slate of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Jun Abines, co-lead organizer from the Duterte Diehard Supporters (DDS) group, said.
“The event will be anchored on thanking the Cebuanos for supporting Gov. Pamela and the Duterte candidates,” Abines said in a press conference on Friday, June 13.
Abines said permits for the rally are still being secured but the event will be likely held near the Provincial Capitol.
Head organizer Ian Gacrama said they are expecting 10,000 to 12,000 individuals. He added that the winning and losing candidates who ran under Duterte’s Partido Demokratiko Pilipino will be invited to attend the event.
Vice President Sara Duterte and the rest of the Duterte family will also be invited, Abines added.
Abines said that the gathering will also serve as a call for unity. He emphasized that the event is open for everyone.
Former Audit and Elections Commissioner Rowena Guanzon will be one of the event’s invited guests.
Guanzon, a vocal critic of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, said she personally knows Baricuatro.
“She is a fellow alumna at Harvard Kennedy School of Government,” said Guanzon.
Guanzon said she will “certainly help Pam in any way I can.”
“I can give her ideas about local governance. I taught government and election laws. I can give her my thoughts on the Local Government Code, being a former mayor for six years,” Guanzon said.
Baricuatro pulled off a major shocker in the elections, getting 1,107,924 votes to defeat Garcia, whose bid for sixth term was foiled after getting just 765,051 votes.
Garcia has filed an election protest before the Commission on Elections, citing irregularities in more than 4,100 clustered precincts.
