The Low-Pressure Area (LPA) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has developed into a tropical depression and was named “Auring,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Thursday evening, June 12.
(PAGASA)
Auring is the first tropical cyclone to form within the PAR in 2025.
As of 10 p.m., PAGASA estimated the tropical depression's location to be 295 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes.
It has maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 55 kph.
The tropical depression is moving in a north-northwestward direction at 15 kph.
PAGASA said Auring is expected to continue on this path and make landfall over Taiwan between Thursday evening and early Friday, June 13.
Due to land interaction, Auring is likely to weaken rapidly into an LPA by Friday afternoon.
While no tropical cyclone wind signals have been raised, PAGASA warned of moderate to heavy rains over Batanes and Cagayan within the next 24 hours.
