BACOLOD CITY – More than 2,000 evacuees from five barangays in La Castellana, Negros Occidental will be relocated from school-evacuation centers to areas designated as safe sites to continue their temporary stay amid the continuing threat of Kanlaon Volcano.
The municipal government has started the decamping of some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) on Thursday, June 12, based on social media posts.

Evacuees who will be relocated to barangay covered courts and other identified safe sites are from Barangays Sag-ang, Mansalanao, Masulog, Biak na Bato, and Cabagna-an.
Mayor Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan met Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II on Wednesday, June 11, along with representatives from concerned government agencies and key stakeholders, to discuss the transition of evacuees from school-based shelters to alternative safe locations.
This move was done to ensure uninterrupted education and uphold the dignity and welfare of displaced families, according to the provincial government.
During the meeting, a report was presented on the decampment of school-based evacuation centers in compliance with National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Memorandum No. 135, Series of 2025, which mandates the clearing of schools being used as evacuation centers ahead of the start of the new school year.
The provincial government assured that evacuees will continue to receive essential facilities, services, and basic needs throughout the transition.
In media interview Thursday, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said that a budget has been allocated for identified permanent relocation site for Kanlaon evacuees. However, the chosen land area did not pass the assessment.
“I think right now, there are two owners, whose properties pass the grid, and we’re negotiating with them,” Lacson said.
He said that IDPs who have decided to move in with their relatives were allowed to go home.
“We’re also looking at those who lived by the roads, maybe they would be the next group to be allowed to go home,” the governor added.
The La Castellana Elementary School announced on its Facebook page the implementation of full face-to-face classes when classes open on June 16.
The school is one of the facilities used as evacuation center for IDPs since the June 3, 2024 eruption.
“We look forward to welcoming all Batang South back on campus for a productive and engaging school year,” the school stated.
La Carlota City, Negros Occidental has also recommended the return of some IDPs outside the six-kilometer danger zone to their homes to give way for the in-person classes in schools used as evacuation centers.
