Filipinos have a deep love for our country, and this affection is a significant part of our identity. We take pride in our stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. However, we do not celebrate our heritage as much as we should. Often, we overlook the greatness of our culture because it does not receive the recognition it deserves on the global stage.

To enhance our cultural story, the documentary series “I Love Filipino” will launch on Netflix on June 12. This date is significant as it is our nation’s Independence Day, a day filled with pride.

Marnie Manicad produces this five-part series through her production company, Team MMPI Production, where she holds the positions of Chief Executive Officer, Executive Producer, and Principal Director. The series aims to thoughtfully explore and answer a fundamental question: What is Filipino?

“Before embarking on this creative journey, we posed a critical inquiry: 'What does it mean to be Filipino?'” Marnie said during the media premiere held at the National Museum in Manila. “Throughout the five 30-minute episodes, our goal is to uncover meaningful insights that resonate with both Filipinos and global audiences.”

Marnie hopes that the series will help viewers from outside our ethnicity better understand what it means to be Filipino. This documentary is inspired by a lasting commitment to promoting a sense of national identity through the media.

“For nearly two decades, Team MMPI has dedicated itself to producing content that inspires pride in the Philippines. Alongside Jiggy, my co-creator, we've always strived to serve God and our country to the best of our abilities. This project is my way of giving back and personally contributing to our nation's progress,” she shared.

Continuing, Marnie emphasized, “I firmly believe that sharing uplifting content can enhance our national spirit, empowering us to confront future challenges with resilience. My mission is to contribute to positive transformations for Filipinos by showcasing our rich heritage, vibrant culture, inherent creativity, and exceptional talent.”

As the director driving this significant venture, Marnie gained invaluable insights and a renewed appreciation for the traditions, values, and histories that define our nation.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to spearhead this project. Team MMPI has immersed itself in various facets of Filipino life, including music, culinary arts, visual arts, Sawsawan (dipping sauces), and architecture. The inspiring narratives shared by our interviewees made this experience profoundly fulfilling, all under the guidance of our host and head writer, Jiggy Manicad,” she said.

Although the production faced its share of challenges, Marnie viewed them as blessings. "Every project brings obstacles, but this endeavor is significant as it enables us to showcase the essence of being Filipino. Despite the hurdles, not everyone has the privilege to create such a work that encapsulates our pride and identity."

Among the exciting episodes is “Pinoy Altanghap,” which delves into the heart of Filipino cuisine. It highlights beloved dishes like Tapsilog—fried rice accompanied by marinated beef, Lechon Carcar—roasted pig known for its crispy skin, and Sisig—a savory plate of chopped meat. This episode delves into the flavors that resonate with Filipinos’ culinary preferences and explores our rich culinary history, examining the indispensable ingredients in Filipino cooking.

Another captivating episode, titled “Himig,” investigates the essence of Filipino music, illuminating its profound significance within our culture. It poses essential questions such as, “Can we preserve our music amidst the diverse influences from abroad?” and “How crucial is music to our cultural identity?”

The episode “Juan with Art” features modern Filipino artists whose creativity and techniques have propelled the Philippines into the global art scene. Esteemed figures like Leinil Yu, a revered name in the comics industry, painter Ronald Ventura, and sculptor Michael Cacnio showcase their outstanding artistry, providing insight into the profound connection between contemporary art and Filipino identity.

Meanwhile, “SawsawJuan” offers a delightful exploration of beloved dipping sauces, emphasizing how these condiments enhance the flavors and textures of Filipino cuisine, showcasing the variety and richness that accompany every meal.

The episode “Bahay Kubo” pays homage to the iconic Nipa Hut, often dismissed as a symbol of modest living. However, this episode sheds light on the unique perspectives of talented modern Filipino architects, illustrating why the nipa hut remains a remarkable inspiration today, thanks to its sustainable design and adaptability to the Filipino way of life.

“I Love Filipino” is co-written and hosted by the internationally recognized and award-winning broadcast journalist Jiggy Manicad. He emphasizes the importance of acknowledging our cultural wealth and heritage, stating, “We have so much to cherish, and it is crucial to embed this awareness into the consciousness of every Filipino. 'I Love Filipino' is just one step toward achieving this goal.”

Mark your calendars for the premiere of "I Love Filipino" on Netflix on June 12. This series promises to be a heartfelt tribute to the Filipino identity, showcasing the beauty and richness of our culture to the world.
