BJMP officers, PDLs back Palawan's 'Brigada Eskwela' program

Personnel of the Puerto Princesa City Jail, along with 50 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), took part in the government’s “Brigada Eskwela” program, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said on Wednesday, June 11.

Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo, information officer of the BJMP-Mimaropa, said the PDLs wrapped around 576 books that will be used by the students this school year.

He said the initiative served not only as a contribution to Brigada Eskwela but also as a platform for PDLs to participate meaningfully in societal efforts and demonstrate their commitment to rehabilitation and reform.

“Every step towards change begins with a simple act of compassion. Through Brigada Eskwela, we emphasize that education is not solely the responsibility of schools but a shared duty of the entire community—including PDLs who are eager to transform their lives,” Anglo said.

The PDL participant, Joel, expressed gratitude for being involved in the project.

“Sa bawat pabalat na aming inilagay, hindi lang aklat ang aming pinapangalagaan, kundi ang aming pag-asa at pagkakataon na magbago. Ito din ay patunay na sa kabila ng aming nakaraan, may pagnanais kaming magtagumpay at magbigay ng positibong kontribusyon sa komunidad (In every book we cover, it is not only about the books we protect but also our hope and opportunity to change. Despite our past, it is also a living proof that we long to provide positive contribution to the community),’’ the PDL noted.

“The initiative highlighted the importance of education and the vital role of community members—regardless of their circumstances—in fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment,’’ the PPCJ said.

The activity was conducted in support of the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela, an annual program aimed at preparing schools for the opening of classes through collaborative community action.
