Weight stigma keeps Pinoys from seeking obesity treatment—mental health expert

Stigma and misinformation are hindering many Filipinos with obesity from getting the care they need, a psychiatrist warned as health professionals call for a broader understanding of obesity as a complex medical disorder.
Dr. Ma. Corazon Del Mundo, a diplomate member of the Philippine Psychiatric Association (PPA), underscored the psychological toll of stigma in individuals living with obesity.
“Unfortunately, weight stigma and misinformation are deeply ingrained in our society. Individuals affected by obesity often face shame and judgment, not only externally but also within healthcare environments. This stigma can prevent them from seeking the treatment they deserve,” she said during the launch of the Truth About Weight campaign by Novo Nordisk in Taguig City on Tuesday, June 10.
Obesity is often dismissed as a matter of poor discipline, but health professionals emphasized that it is a chronic disease shaped by multiple factors, including genetics, hormones, environment, and mental health.
According to campaign organizers, this misunderstanding fuels stigma that leads to discrimination and delays in treatment.
Dr. Cyrus Pasamba, senior medical manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines, said the campaign hopes to change how society sees and talks about obesity.
“Our goal is to shift the conversation from blame to understanding and from stigma to support,” he said.
“Obesity transcends mere aesthetics; it is a legitimate disease that warrants serious attention, robust resources, and, above all, compassion.”
The Truth About Weight campaign includes a dedicated website with science-based information, educational materials, a free weight health risk assessment, and stories from individuals living with obesity.
Health experts urged the public to stop judging people by their size and instead encourage proper diagnosis and care.
“The silence surrounding obesity must end. It is a disease that we must treat with urgency and seriousness,” Wei Sun, the general manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines, stated.
