'Squid Game' director says no season 4; stars reflect on journey
After five years, the hit Netflix Korean series “Squid Game” will wrap up with the third and final season that will premiere on June 27.
“Squid Game” season 1 premiered on Netflix on Sept. 17, 2021 and drew massive success.
It still holds the record of the most watched title on Netflix with 265.2 million views or 2.2 billion hours viewed.
“Squid Game” season 3 stars Lee Jung-jae as Gi-hun, Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man, Wi Ha-jun as Hwang Jun-ho, Kang Ha-neul, Yim Si-wan, Jo Yuri, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Roh Jae-won and Park Gyu-young.
The final season tells the story of Gi-hun who lost his best friend in the game and re-entered with his own purpose, the Front Man who hid his identity and the players who survived the deadly children’s games.
On June 9, the stars and director Hwang Dong-hyuk held a press conference for “Squid Game” season 3 in Seoul.
"Five years have passed with 'Squid Game.' I am grateful to the viewers who stayed with us until the very end. All the actors and staff worked hard up until season 3, so please watch over us and support us," said Hwang Dong-hyuk, Korean media reported.
The director declared that there will be no season 4 of “Squid Game.”
"It's something we've already discussed with Netflix in advance. There are no plans to make a season 4. If you watch season 3, you'll think that there doesn't have to be a next season," he said.
He added, “Seong Ki-hoon and the Front Man have different beliefs about humanity. It will be fun to watch the battle of values between the two."
Lee Jung-jae said, "Please focus on Gi-huns’ change of mind after he overcomes his friend's death and the guilt and despair of not being able to save many people in the game At first, his mindset was to punish the people who created this game, but in season 3, he makes up his mind about what he should do in this game. Please watch Gi-hun’s transformation process."
Lee Byung-hun hid his identity when he re-entered the game.
"In season 3, the Font Man sees Gi-hun still believing in humans and plans to ruin everything for him again. If seasons 2 and 3 are one story, then season 3 will ultimately have a climax and ending. That's why it has no choice but to run intensely in terms of drama and various aspects. Perhaps you could say that it is a full-scale confrontation between the Front Man and Gi-hun.”
Wi Ha-jun reflected on the past three seasons of “Squid Game.”
"We first filmed Season 1 in May 2020, and five years have already passed. It's a new feeling that I don't know how time passed. I was happy that it was loved around the world to the point that season 3 will be released. It was also an honor to be able to work on a work that raised the status of K-content around the world. I hope that it will be remembered in many people's hearts for a long time," he said.
Lee Byung-hun said, "I always feel bittersweet whenever I finish a project, but this time, I felt something new. I was warmly welcomed while promoting in the US, and I've experienced several Hollywood projects so far, but I've never experienced such support and hospitality before. It was a new feeling to receive such great hospitality with our content.”
On the popularity of “Squid Game,” he said. "It takes the games we played as children to extremes in a cruel way, but I think people from countries with different cultures and languages sympathize with and love it because of the political and social issues contained in the work. Our drama talks about a lot, but I think it's ultimately about humanity. I think that's a topic that people from any country or place can sympathize with and think about together."
According to Lee Jung-jae, "I'm grateful to have experienced Director Hwang Dong-hyuk's deep and grand worldview. It's not easy to balance and lead such a large and delicate story, but I think it's amazing to see the emotional expression of social issues and human relationships."
