Rising Filipino fighter Weljon Mindoro once again displayed his firepower, scoring a sensational first-round knockout of previously undefeated Omar Munguia in their non-title middleweight bout at the Boeing Center, Tech Port in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday, June 8 (Manila time).

Mindoro hardly broke sweat in keeping his record pristine, delivering two wicked body shots against his Mexican foe before coming through with a vicious right uppercut that sent Munguia stumbling down to the canvas.

Munguia grimaced in pain from the body blows he took as the referee waved off the fight with 1:29 remaining in the opening round after seeing the Mexican struggle to stand.

The pride of Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur lived up to the billing as one of the country’s up-and-coming knockout artists, improving his undefeated record to 14-0, all by way of knockout.

Munguia, on the other hand, absorbed his first taste of defeat and his first knockout loss, dropping to an 8-1-1 record with six knockouts.

The two fighters were actually still sizing each other up in the opening minute of the fight, using their jabs to set up their power shots. Mindoro, however, was the aggressor and forced Munguia to the corner where he meticulously wore him down with the body shots.

Mindoro connected on a right to the body first before the booming right to the body slipped past the Mexican’s defense. Hurt, although still had tons of fight left, Munguia, tried to move forward and engage but he was greeted by a beautifully placed uppercut from Mindoro.

Munguia never recovered from there as it even took him a couple of minutes after the fight to pick himself up.
