'Palaban mode on': Yedda Romualdez denies eyeing Cebu governor's seat; namedrops Duke Frasco

"Please do not use my name for your selfish political interests."

The usually congenial Tingog Party-list Rep. Yedda Romualdez had this to say--and more--in a rather strongly worded statement on Facebook Saturday night, June 7 regarding the politics in the province of Cebu.

"I want to speak directly to the people of Cebu—and to the Filipino public—who may have seen my name being dragged into local political speculation," said the congresswoman and wife of House Speaker Martin Romualdez of Leyte's 1st district. 

Rep. Romualdez's main contention was that contrary to apparent rumors in Cebu, she wasn't targeting the gubernarorial seat there. It should be noted that the 2025 mid-term elections took place only last May 12.

"Let me be very clear: I am not running for governor. I am not running for any position in Cebu. I have not transferred my residency," stressed Rep. Romualdez, who went on to mention the name of a Cebu congressman.

"These are facts that can easily be verified. It is very easy to check the Comelec records in Liloan. I am not a registered voter there. My mother is registered in Cebu City—but I am not. Duke knows fully well whether or not I am his constituent," she said, referring to Deputy Speaker Cebu 5th district Rep. Vincent Franco "Duke" Frasco. 

"To those spreading rumors, I say this with respect: Please do not use my name for your selfish political interests...Politics should be about public service, not power games. And right now, my focus is clear: serving the Filipino people, not personal ambition," she continued.

Rep. Romualdez went as far to tell Cebuanos not to vote for her if they ever see her name on local ballots.

"Ako na po mismo ang nagsasabi sa inyo: huwag n'yo akong iboto (I'll be the one to tell you: don't vote for me). Because that would not be me."

Incidentally, Frasco grabbed headlines the same weekend for reportedly not signing the manifesto of support for the continued leadership of Speaker Romualdez in the upcoming 20th Congress.

This move led to his being dropped as a member of the National Unity Party (NUP), a staunch backer of Speaker Romualdez and President Marcos. 

Frasco is the son-in-law of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, who lost her relection bid in the May polls.
