Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan took center stage alongside President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos during the ceremonial lighting of the historic Jones Bridge on Saturday, June 7, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the People’s Republic of China (PROC).
The event was held at the Pasig River Esplanade, the event brought together key figures from both governments, including Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian, Presidential Adviser for Pasig River Development Secretary Jerry Acuzar, and representatives from the Filipino-Chinese business community.
Lacuna-Pangan expressed pride in hosting the symbolic celebration in the heart of the nation's capital. She emphasized Manila’s vital role in fostering international partnerships and preserving cultural heritage.
The city government said the city’s first female mayor has been at the forefront of revitalization efforts, including the preservation of historic landmarks like the Jones Bridge.
The illumination of the bridge, the mayor noted, symbolizes the city’s renewed commitment to cultural and international engagement.
There was a musical fireworks display following the ceremonial lighting, with the iconic bridge glowing in vibrant colors, a fitting tribute to the 50-year relationship between the Philippines and China, established in June 1975.
She reiterated her administration’s commitment to supporting national initiatives that promote diplomacy, economic development, and heritage conservation.
