DICT eyes 8 million digital jobs by 2028 under new leadership

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has launched its flagship “Trabahong Digital” program with the bold goal of creating eight million digital jobs by 2028.

“The roll out of this flagship program marks a bold step toward inclusive economic recovery and digital transformation under the leadership of newly appointed DICT Secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda,” DICT Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Renato Paraiso during the launch of National ICT Month in Basco, Batanes.

Themed “Walang Iwanan sa Digital Bayanihan,” this year’s celebration underscores the agency’s commitment to ensuring that no Filipino is left behind in the country’s digital transformation.

The program focuses on building up the country’s digital economy by boosting nationwide internet access, especially in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs), and equipping Filipinos with digital skills that allow them to work “anywhere, anytime.”

According to Aguda, true development happens when people work together and no one is left behind.

“Driving the digital-first economy will maximize job opportunities and business growth through digital skills empowerment and by providing our people with the tools they need to succeed,” the DICT chief stated.

The DICT said Aguda has outlined a vision to build a resilient and transformative ICT sector. One of his priorities is to promote digital trust and safety by enforcing data privacy protocols and demanding accountability from digital platforms.

Also, the agency said it is working with platforms such as Meta to identify and remove fake job advertisements that put digital workers at risk.

The move is part of broader efforts to protect the integrity of online job markets, it added.

The agency is also pushing to simplify government services through the modernization of e-governance platforms.

The DICT said such reforms are expected to benefit citizens, particularly in remote areas, by reducing red tape and making services easier to access.

The agency said it is confident about reaching its job creation target, citing strong partnerships with local governments, state universities and colleges, and private sector groups.
