The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has announced that multiple regions across the country are likely to experience persistent and widespread rainfall in the coming days due to the combined effects of a Low Pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon (habagat).
Heavy rainfall expected in the coming days due to LPA, 'habagat'— PAGASA
PAGASA warns of heavy rainfall from June 7 to 10 due to a Low Pressure Area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon (habagat), causing widespread rain, flash floods, and landslide risks across multiple Philippine regions. (PAGASA / MANILA BULLETIN)
LPA, southwest monsoon to bring significant rainfall
In its advisory issued on Saturday, June 7, PAGASA reported that as of 3:00 p.m., the LPA was located approximately 175 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes.
This weather disturbance is expected to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the Bicol Region, Central and Eastern Visayas, Aurora, and Quezon.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon will affect Metro Manila, MIMAROPA, Mindanao, and the remaining parts of Central Luzon and the Visayas, resulting in moderate to heavy rainfall.
The public is advised to remain cautious due to the heightened risk of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Rainfall forecast and areas of concern
PAGASA said rainfall amounts ranging from 50 to 200 millimeters are expected across various provinces from June 7 to 10.
The prolonged rainfall may lead to flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous terrain.
The forecast for rainfall due to the LPA is as follows:
June 7–8: Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar (50–100 mm)
June 8–9: Quezon, Camarines Norte and Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar (50–100 mm)
June 9–10: Camarines Norte and Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and Masbate (50–100 mm)
In addition, the southwest monsoon is projected to bring the following rainfall:
June 7–8:
50–100 mm: Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Antique, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Zamboanga del Norte
June 8–9:
100–200 mm: Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique
50–100 mm: Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Zamboanga del Norte
June 9–10:
100–200 mm: Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique
50–100 mm: Zambales, Tarlac, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Negros Occidental, and Zamboanga del Norte
PAGASA noted that rainfall totals could be higher in mountainous and elevated areas, where runoff from previous rainfall events may exacerbate localized flooding and landslide risks.
Public advisory, preparedness measures
In light of the forecast, authorities are urging residents in affected and nearby areas to exercise vigilance and adopt appropriate safety measures to safeguard lives and property.
PAGASA emphasized that its regional offices may issue localized advisories, including Heavy Rainfall Alerts and Thunderstorm Advisories, to provide timely updates on evolving weather conditions.
The public is advised to monitor official bulletins and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices for further instructions.
