New LPA forms; rain to prevail over parts of the Philippines

A low-pressure area (LPA) formed east of Mindanao on Thursday, June 5, and its trough or extension is expected to bring rains over parts of the Visayas and Mindanao within the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
PAGASA weather specialist Chenel Dominguez said the LPA was located 1,255 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao as of 3 a.m. Thursday.
While it remains less likely to develop into a tropical cyclone, Dominguez said its trough is already affecting weather conditions in several areas.
Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected over Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte.
The southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” also continues to affect parts of Luzon and Mindanao.
Dominguez said the habagat will bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Zambales, Bataan, Palawan, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.
Residents in areas affected by the LPA and the habagat are advised to remain vigilant against possible flash floods or landslides, especially during moderate to heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated monsoon rain showers or localized thunderstorms are expected over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.
Similar weather conditions are expected across the rest of the country due to localized thunderstorms.
Dominguez also reminded the public to stay alert, as severe thunderstorms may also trigger flash floods or landslides in vulnerable areas.
