TACLOBAN CITY — The National Committee on Geological Sciences declared Biri Rocks in Biri, Northern Samar, a National Geological Monument on Wednesday.
Alongside the declaration was the official launching of Northern Samar as an Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark.
The Biri Rock Formation is known for its exceptional geological characteristics, scientific importance, uniqueness, and natural beauty.
Gov. Edwin Ongchuan expressed pride over what Northern Samar is capable of, with its geological, gastronomical, historic, and cultural wonders, as much as its archaeological and astronomical potential.
In his message, the governor thanked the provincial government's partners.
He acknowledged the support of local communities, especially the people of Biri, fellow public servants, and the Ibabao Festival Executive Committee led by Vice Gov. Clarence Dato.
“Each has contributed a piece to the larger vision we are building – a vision of Northern Samar that is rooted in heritage, enriched by science, guided by history, flavored by culture, and open to the universe,” Ongchuan said.
“Let us continue to stand together as stewards of creation, as bearers of culture, and as proud Nortehanons.”
