PCG joins maritime exercise with US, Japan

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will participate in a trilateral maritime exercise with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and Japan Coast Guard (LCG) in Kagoshima, Japan from June 16 to 20.

In a statement, the PCG said it would deploy its 97-meter multi-role response vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) to the exercise, the second time that the three nations held such capacity-building activity.

A send-off ceremony for BRP Teresa Magbanua and her crew was scheduled for Friday, June 6.

“The said undertaking is anchored on President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr.’s directive for the PCG to engage in capacity-building initiatives that promote cooperation, understanding, and mutual trust among Coast Guard counterparts,” the PCG said.

“Through the second trilateral maritime exercise, the PCG envisions stronger collaboration and deeper diplomatic relations with its Coast Guard counterparts, as well as the exploration of more avenues for maritime cooperation towards a rules-based order.

BRP Teresa Magbanua is expected to arrive at Kagoshima Port on June 12, coinciding with the celebration of the Philippine Independence Day.

The vessel will then undergo a three-day maintenance and repair. After that, she will take part in a reception ceremony alongside a USCG cutter on June 16.

Throughout the drill, the three nations’ coast guards will conduct facility tours, mutual visits to patrol vessels, maritime exercise meetings, and capacity-building exercises.

The activity followed the first-ever trilateral maritime exercise among the three countries in Mariveles, Bataan in June 2023.

There, they strengthened their interoperability through a myriad of drills such as communication exercises, maneuvering drills, photo exercises, maritime law enforcement training, search and rescue (SAR), and passing exercises.

“The PCG recognizes the significant contributions of USCG and JCG in improving the skills and expertise of its men and women through various human resource development programs,” the coast guard said.
