The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) detention unit has extended the allowed days for the family of former president Rodrigo Duterte to visit him at the Scheveningen Prison in The Hague, Netherlands.

This was revealed by Vice President Sara Duterte during an exchange with Duterte supporters outside the detention facility in The Hague on Tuesday, June 3.

“So, we are thankful for the ICC detention unit because they approved our request to increase the number of days that we can visit former president Rodrigo Duterte. As far as I remember, it is allowed to visit on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Thank you for that,” she said in Filipino.

The younger Duterte and her mother and the former president’s ex-wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman, had just visited her father, who had been detained there since March 12, for one hour and 30 minutes on Tuesday. This was the second visit in a week, she said.

After she and her mother return to the Philippines, her brother, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte and his family, and Honeylet Avanceña, her father’s common-law wife, are the next kin scheduled to visit.

The Duterte family earlier decided that at least one relative or kin of the former chief executive would remain in The Hague to look after his needs.

The Vice President shared that she also asked her father about the food in the detention facility, but he dismissed the need to worry about his food.

“He said, update me about the case. So, we updated him according to what is allowed to us as non-lawyers to tell him,” she added.

Only family members and lawyers are allowed to visit the elder Duterte in detention.

The Vice President also updated her father about their family, specifically about her brother Paolo and youngest sister, Veronica or Kitty.

“He’s proud of it,” she cited her father’s reaction to Kitty’s billboard ad in Manila.

The former chief executive didn’t miss the chance to tease his ex-wife. “Tinanong nya mama ko kung kilala mo si Honeylet (He asked my mom if she knows Honeylet),” the younger Duterte recalled, but her mom answered in the negative.

Insomnia

The Vice President was also worried if her father was getting enough rest and sleep, so she inquired about him possibly suffering from insomnia.

“Wala akong insomnia (I don’t have insomnia),” he assured her. “Minsan lang di ako makatulog dahil sa kakaisip sa nanay mo (Sometimes, I just cannot sleep because I was thinking about your mother).”

Zimmerman sought the nullification of her marriage from the elder Duterte in 1998 and has remained civil with him since then. They share three children—Paolo, Sara, and Sebastian.

‘Go home’

The Vice President also shared with her father how she celebrated her 47th birthday last May 31 with their supporters at the Laan van Reagan en Gorbatjov, The Hague.

They staged the “ICC, send Duterte home” rally with Senators Robin Padilla and Imee Marcos, as well as former Palace spokesman Harry Roque, Senator-elect Rodante Marcoleta, and lawyer Vic Rodriguez.

Aside from the Vice President, Sebastian Duterte, who won as vice mayor in Davao City along with his father’s mayoralty win, also gave a speech.

The former president expressed his gratitude to his supporters through his daughter.

“He said, tell them, I am eternally grateful for your showing of support, and I recognize your sacrifice which you have not to do,” she shared.

“So, you can now go home. That's what he said,” she recalled.

Some Europe-based overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), however, told the Vice President that they will not leave the former chief executive, whom they fondly call “Tatay Digong.”

“Hanggang sa dulo, walang iwanan (Until the end, we will not leave you),” they said.
