The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Monday, June 2 the start of the season following several days of scattered to widespread rainfall brought by the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat.”
While the habagat has been the prevailing wind pattern since May 30, PAGASA officially declared the onset of the rainy season only after confirming sufficient rainfall amounts at key monitoring stations across western Luzon and Visayas.
Despite the arrival of the rainy season, PAGASA said there may still be monsoon breaks or periods of reduced or no rainfall that can last from several days to weeks.
These breaks often bring temporary dry conditions amid the generally wet conditions of the season.
PAGASA urged the public and concerned government agencies to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against the adverse effects of the rainy season, including flooding, landslides, and other weather-related hazards associated with habagat and other climate events.
