PNPA grads express gratitude to PBBM for Torre's appointment as country's top cop

The Philippine National Police Academy Alumni Association, Inc. (PNPAAAI) expressed gratitude to President Marcos for breaking the cycle of the past 30 appointments of the country’s top cop by finally choosing an alumnus of the police academy.

Police Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, a member of the PNPA “Tagapaglunsad Class” of 1993, will take over as the 31st Chief of the Philippine National Police, replacing Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), after a four-month extension of his tour of duty.

In a statement signed by nine PNPAAI officers headed by its chairperson Gilbert DC Cruz, it described the Chief Executive’s appointment of Torre as “a powerful affirmation of the enduring values of the Academy-justice, integrity, and service to the nation.”

“This historic appointment marks a milestone for the Philippine National Police Academy, being the first time that a PNPA alumnus has been entrusted with the highest leadership post in the PNP,” the statement read.

“We sincerely thank the President for this momentous decision and for his unwavering trust in a son of the Academy. This landmark appointment brings great honor to the PNPA and serves as an enduring source of pride and inspiration to its alumni and cadets,” it added.

Torre was among the three Lakans, or PNPA graduates, to which the Marcos chose from—the first time that the Chief PNP contenders were dominated by non-PMA graduates.

Aside from Torre, listed as PNPA graduate top contenders were Police Lt. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo, the only Lakan in the Command Group and the first PNPA graduate to lead the elite Special Action Force (SAF) and the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO); and, incumbent NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin.

It also expressed full support to Torre: “We express our confidence in his leadership and reaffirm our commitment to partner with the PNP in upholding peace, security, and public trust throughout the country.”
