MMDA suspends odd-even scheme after EDSA rebuild cancellation

Following the decision of President Marcos to cancel the rehabilitation of EDSA, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Sunday, June 1, that it will also be scrapping the implementation of the odd-even scheme in Metro Manila’s busiest thoroughfare.

MMDA chairperson Don Artes said they will stick with the current number-coding scheme.

“Pursuant to the directive of the President, the MMDA will suspend the imposition of the odd-even scheme which was part of the traffic management plan that was laid down intended to decongest EDSA before the looming rebuild,” Artes said.

Marcos earlier ordered the cancellation of the EDSA rebuild over concerns on the economic impact of the expected monstrous traffic jams not only along EDSA but also on other thoroughfares in Metro Manila.

The MMDA has already drafted plans to at least ease the traffic burden, including the odd-even scheme and the use of Mabuhay Lanes and other alternate routes.

Artes said they welcome the President’s decision as it would lead to proper authorities finding better ways to ease the burden of the commuting public.

““The postponement will give us time to look for other traffic mitigating options for the EDSA Rebuild which will be less than burdensome to motorists and the commuting public,” said Artes.
