The Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public against fake Facebook posts claiming there will be a lockdown due to monkeypox (Mpox), stressing that the virus is not airborne and there is no need for such measures.

In an official advisory on Saturday, May 31, the DOH said that lockdowns are unnecessary, and warned the public not to fall for viral posts using misleading health claims or fake endorsements.

There is no need for a lockdown due to mpox because it is not airborne. The Department of Health (DOH) reminds the public not to believe circulating fake Facebook posts that use deceptive marketing strategies, fake endorsements from experts, and false statements about health),” it stated.

The agency urged the public to rely only on official sources for health information and said it has coordinated with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to take down the false content.

Naipagbigay-alam na ng Kagawaran sa Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) ang nasabing pahina para ito ay maipatanggal (The public is encouraged to follow only the official Facebook page of the DOH (https://www.facebook.com/DOHgovPH) for accurate health information. The Department has already informed the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) about the said page so it can be taken down),” the DOH added.

The health department said it continues to work with local government units (LGUs) to deliver accurate medical services to confirmed and suspected Mpox cases.

Per DOH, more Mpox cases were recorded in 2024 than in 2025.

It added that number of cases in April 2025 was also higher than in May, but this was due to increased reporting by active LGUs.

“Mas marami pang Mpox nung 2024. Mas marami ring naitala nung Abril kaysa ngayong Mayo 2025. There were more Mpox cases in 2024. More were also recorded in April than in May 2025. It only appears to be making headlines now because local government units are currently active and issuing announcements),” the agency stated.

The department emphasized that the more dangerous Clade I-b variant has not been detected in the country.

There are still no Mpox Clade I-b cases detected in the Philippines. All cases here are Clade II. The mortality rate of Clade II is lower, about one in every ten, compared to 4–5 in Clade I-b).”
