- Magnolia and Barangay Ginebra open a new chapter to their fabled Manila Clasico rivalry with the Hotshots adding a new player for their PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup clash at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday June 1.
The Hotshots (7-1), as if keeping their hold of the top spot is not enough, have upgraded their frontline with the addition of William Navarro from the NorthPort Batang Pier to pair to the team's budding star in Zav Lucero.
And that frontcourt combination should be put to an early test against a Barangay Ginebra team surely eager to bounce back in their 7:30 p.m. clash after a frustrating 82-73 loss to Meralco two days ago.
Providing the fitting appetizer is the showdown between the NLEX, which is looking to keep in step with Magnolia for the top seed, and Phoenix, which, on the other hand, is aiming to stay in contention for the playoff spot in the 5 p.m. affair.
Navarro has been playing great basketball with NorthPort so far, averaging 20.57 points and 10.57 rebounds – both the fourth best in each category in the league.
It remains to be seen whether he could bring the same level of play for the Hotshots or how well he can adjust to a team that also has the likes of Paul Lee, Mark Barroca, Ian Sangalang and young budding stars in Peter Alfaro and Jerom Lastimosa.
They will be faced up against a deep and potent Kings roster which will be led by Scottie Thompson and Japeth Aguilar. Stephen Holt, RJ Abarrientos and Jamie Malonzo are also all capable of providing contributions though they need to play on the same page if they wish to topple the Hotshots.
The Kings (5-3) were denied an outright quarterfinals passage by the Bolts – a loss that seemingly frustrated even head coach Tim Cone who was thrown out late in the contest due to two consecutive technical fouls.
A win for Ginebra against Magnolia or a Phoenix loss against NLEX would put them on the six-win mark in the standing, assuring them a spot in the quarterfinals.
