Rainfall warnings have been issued for several Luzon areas as the frontal system and southwesterly wind flow are expected to bring scattered to heavy rain and thunderstorms over the weekend, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Friday, May 30.
Weekend showers: 2 weather systems to trigger rains in Luzon — PAGASA
PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are likely to prevail over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and Central Luzon within the next 24 hours, due to the southwesterly wind flow, a precursor to the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat.”
Cagayan Valley is also expected to experience similar conditions due to the presence of the frontal system, which forms from the interaction of warm and cold air masses.
Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms brought by the southwesterly wind flow.
The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
Rain to last until next week
Aurelio said moderate to heavy rains may persist in Ilocos Region, Metro Manila, and parts of CAR, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan until Tuesday, June 3.
On Saturday, heavy rainfall is likely in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, and Bataan due to the southwesterly wind flow.
Meanwhile, the frontal system is expected to bring heavy rain to Batanes and Babuyan Islands.
Heavy rainfall is expected to continue into Sunday, June 1 in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, and Bataan due to the southwesterly wind flow.
PAGASA advised residents in affected areas to remain vigilant for localized flooding, especially in low-lying, urbanized, or river-adjacent areas.
Landslides are also possible in mountainous or landslide-prone communities.
