OPAPRU, Aboitiz collaborate to boost digital skills of Pinays in vulnerable areas
The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. to empower underprivileged women in conflict-affected and vulnerable areas through the “Elevate AIDA”.
Elevate AIDA is a program that offers artificial intelligence data annotation (AIDA) training to disadvantaged women, giving them access to remote work, freelancing, and digital entrepreneurship opportunities.
The MOU was signed by OPAPRU Secretary Carlito G. Galvez Jr. and Aboitiz Foundation President Ana Margarita Hontiveros-Malvar in Makati City on Thursday, May 29.
Through the initiative, participants will acquire key skills for remote digital jobs, opening up more livelihood opportunities and supporting the national government’s peacebuilding goals.
The project will be rolled out in seven regions across the Philippines, including the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), which were strategically identified based on the presence of vulnerable populations and ongoing peacebuilding efforts.
Galvez said the OPAPRU supports the Elevate AIDA program which is being spearheaded by the Aboitiz, as he emphasized that investing in women is an investment to peace.
“By providing women with digital and technology-based training and income-generating opportunities, we expect this project to boost the household incomes of our beneficiaries, promote women’s leadership, contribute to the long-term stability of communities, and build on the gains of the normalization and resilience-building aspects of peace processes in our country,” he said.
Meanwhile, Malvar explained that the program is about the transformation of underprivileged women, and not just about upskilling and technology. She said the program seeks to train 300,000 women nationwide over the next three years.
“This will give them the confidence to say, ‘Kaya ko rin. May lugar ako sa makabagong mundo’ (I can do this. I have a place in the modern world),” she added.
The signing was witnessed by OPAPRU Executive Director Susana Guadalupe H. Marcaida, Connected Women Co-Founder Ruth Yu-Owen, Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) Chairperson Ermelita Valdeavilla, United Nations (UN) Women Country Programme Coordinator Rosalyn Mesina, Bangsamoro Parliament Member Laisa Alamia, members of the OPAPRU executive and management committees, and Aboitiz employees.
