“CPU strongly condemns any act of cruelty against animals,” said the Office of University President Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy in a statement on Friday, May 30.
TWO dogs were alllegedly shot inside a university campus in Iloilo City on May 30.
“As a Christ-centered institution grounded in compassion and respect for life, CPU does not tolerate violence in any form, especially against innocent and defenseless creatures,” the statement added.
A dog shelter, Ilonggo Aspins, posted on its Facebook page photos and subsequent messages it received from witnesses of the incident that allegedly took place around midnight on May 30.
The shooting reportedly happened at the parking lot of the Senior High School building.
One of the two dogs managed to escape. The other reportedly died. The dead dog was placed inside a black garbage bag, which was allegedly then loaded to a white pickup truck’s cargo bed.
“This is so terrible. It looks like it was ordered and planned to be done during the middle of the night so no one would know,” Ilonggo Aspins noted.
The CPU administration has started a thorough investigation of the incident.
“We are coordinating with the security agency involved and relevant authorities to ensure that accountability is upheld, and appropriate actions are taken based on the findings,” the CPU said.
The incident drew many reactions with alumni sharing they used to feed stray dogs and cats roaming around the campus when they were students.
CPU appealed for understanding and assured humane and ethical treatment of animals.
“The University community embraces a culture of care. Many of our students, faculty, and staff are animal lovers, and the University President himself is a proud dog owner,” the CPU said.
