House lawmakers are backing Major General Nicolas Torre's appointment as the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), describing him as "a results-oriented" officer and a "super cop".
Re-elected Quezon 3rd district Rep. Reynante Arrogancia, who is the vice chairperson of the House public order committee, said Thursday, May 29, that Torre's appointment did not come as a surprise as he "has had a distinguished career as a results-oriented police officer".
Among the things that have made him qualified for the post is his tendency to "[respond] to the call of duty by delivering the needed results plus more than expected", according to Arrogancia.
"His unflinching commitment to the rule of law, dependability, and trustworthiness has served the Filipino people well," he said, noting that Torre's "cool nerves of steel were immensely admirable".
Meanwhile, congressman-elect and AKO BICOL Party-list nominee Alfredo Garbin Jr., described Torre as a "super cop". He said Torre's ascension to the top of the PNP hierarchy was a "welcome development for law enforcement and public service".
"Many times, General Torre has upheld the rule of law, due process, and the professional integrity of the police uniform," he said."We firmly believe in his loyalty to the Constitution and our Republic," Garbin added, as he admired the top cop's "intelligence, strategic acumen, tactical expertise, and dedication to public service".
For Barangay Health Wellness (BHW) Party-list Rep. Angelica Natasha Co, Torre’s appointment is a "well-deserved" one.
She expressed hopes that Torre would prioritize the rights and safety of children and families, alongside headline-grabbing, high-profile crimes and cases.
"Our children and families are the beating heart of Filipino society. However, many criminal threats pose a significant risk to their safety," Co said.
"Child abuse in its many forms, domestic violence, hazing, illegal drugs, and crime syndicates are ever-present grave threats we expect General Torre to have his focus on," she added.
