Navotas City lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco has commended President Marcos for fulfilling his P20-per-kilo rice promise when the latter ran for the highest post in the land.
"Natupad na ng Pangulo ang kanyang pangakong ₱20 kada kilong bigas (The President has fulfilled his promise of P20-per-kilo rice)," Tiangco said in a statement Thursday, May 29.
"Sa tulong at pagtutulungan ng mga ahensya ng pamahalaan, patuloy po nating palalawakin ang programang ito upang maisakatuparan ang layunin ng administrasyon na mabigyan ng akses ang mas nakararami (Through partnership among our government agencies, the administration will continue to expand its program in order to fulfill its goal of providing access to more Filipinos)," he added.
Tiangco lauded the Department of Agriculture (DA) for making the President's promise happen through the Kadiwa Program as it sends "a strong signal that the government is taking real steps to address food security and combat hunger".
Currently, the P20-per-kilo rice is being prioritized for vulnerable sectors, including low-income families, senior citizens, solo parents, and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Tiangco believed that the recent pilot partnership between the DA and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will also pave the way for the program’s expansion to include minimum wage earners.
Tiangco then thanked the department for also expanding the program, which had reached not only Luzon but also Visayas.
"Through this initiative, we aim to ease the financial burden on Filipino families while ensuring our farmers are justly compensated for their produce," he said.
"Hindi lang ang mga konsyumer kundi pati ang ating mga magsasaka ang nakikinabang sa programang ito (It is not only consumers but also farmers who will benefit from this program)," he added.
