Parts of Luzon are likely to experience significant rainfall over the next few days due to the combined effects of the southwesterly wind flow and frontal system, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday, May 28.

During PAGASA’s climate forum, weather specialist Ana Clauren-Jorda said the western sections of Luzon will experience scattered rain showers from Thursday, May 29, to Sunday, June 1, as the southwesterly wind flow, a precursor to the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” begins to prevail.
Areas expected to be affected are the Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and northern Palawan.
“We expect light to moderate to, at times, heavy rains, especially from Friday to Sunday, due to the southwesterly wind flow,” Clauren-Jorda said.
Meanwhile, the frontal system, a weather system where warm and cold air meet, will continue to affect extreme Northern Luzon, bringing scattered rain showers over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and Cagayan.
“The frontal system will continue to affect Batanes and Cagayan so we still expect light to moderate, with occasional heavy rains, in extreme Northern Luzon,” she added.
Clauren-Jorda urged residents, especially those in hazard-prone areas, to prepare for the potential impacts of the continuous rains.
“This is what we need to prepare for because from Friday until the weekend, continuous rains may trigger flooding and landslides, especially in low-lying and mountainous areas,” she added.
She also noted that the rainfall expected in the coming days could signal the start of the rainy season in the Philippines.
