Degamo widow welcomes Teves arrest in Timor-Leste

BACOLOD CITY – Pamplona Mayor, Negros Oriental Janice Degamo said that the arrest of former Rep. Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. in Timor-Leste on Tuesday night, May 27, is a significant step towards justice not only for her family but for the people of Negros Oriental and the entire nation.

Teves was tagged as a mastermind in the assassination of Degamo’s husband, Gov. Roel, at the couple’s residence in Pamplona in March 2023. Nine civilians were also killed in the attack. Teves denied perpetrating the incident.
“For over two years, our call has been clear and unwavering, that those responsible for this heinous crime must be held accountable, no matter how far they run or how long they hide,” the mayor said in a statement posted in her social media page on Wednesday, May 28.
Janice believes that the arrest of Teves was due to his status as an illegal alien, having no valid Philippine passport and being the subject of an international alert from the International Police Organization, as well as a standing warrant from the Department of Justice in connection with the brutal murder of her husband and nine others.
“Let this serve as a reminder that no one is above the law,” Janice said, stressing that this recent development reaffirms the strength of international cooperation and their collective pursuit of justice.
Janice said that they are now looking forward to the proper legal proceedings that will bring lasting peace to the province and long overdue justice for her husband.
Teves’ son Axl shared a short video of his father’s arrest led by immigration authorities at 8 p.m. in Timor-Leste.
He posted on Facebook that his father has been kidnapped and abused.
In a Facebook video, Axl said that his father was picked up by immigration authorities at his residence without any form of legal documents.
He said that his father was held “illegally.”
“Please, I am begging you, whoever can help us in this, please help us, please send help,” he added.
The Timor-Leste Court has earlier denied the extradition request of the Philippines for Teves, who is facing multiple murder charges in the country.
The Timor-Leste Court of Appeal granted the Philippines’s extradition requests for Teves in June and December 2024.
Teves' camp contested and appealed twice the rulings, until the recent decision came out denying the third extradition request.
