BJMP: PAO led legal, medical decongestion program conducted at Taguig City Jail

A legal and medical decongestion program was held at the Taguig City Jail Male Dormitory (TCJMD) in a bid to mitigate decongestion in jails and provide health care to the persons deprived of liberty(PDLs), the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said.

Led by Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) chief Persida V. Rueda-Acosta, the program aims to alleviate the overcrowding in jails by giving the PDLs legal understanding about their cases. 

In a statement, the TCJMD recognized that the PAO’s involvement is crucial to provide legal assistance and ensure that these individuals' cases are addressed more promptly. 

By offering advocacy and legal understanding, the TCJMD noted that the PAO facilitates faster case resolutions, allowing PDLs to secure either their release or an equitable trial more efficiently.

Additionally, the TCJMD pointed out that the program also will facilitate medical services which provide free health screening, access to medical professionals and the provision of necessary medications. 

“PDL had free access to dental, medical and optical check-ups which were a huge help to them since they have limited access to such. Many of them received free eyeglasses and availed free tooth extraction,’’ the TCJMD said. 

Acosta reminded the PDLs that they are only vacationers, which is an implication of their temporary stay in the jail facility “that only means that there is still hope and a chance to have a brighter and better future ahead.’’ 

TCJMD warden Supt. Richard D. Kho expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the whole PAO team “for the rare but very significant event in the jail unit.’’

Kho also handed Acosta a symbolic token which was a wooden galleon ship, intricately crafted by the PDLs.

“The event was a proud moment since it was a success. This is a symbol of hope especially to our PDL, as one line said "habang may buhay, may pagasa (If there is life, there is hope),” Kho continued.
