More than 2,500 workers from three major universities and a manufacturing firm are set to receive a total of P373.2 million in benefits following the successful resolution of four labor disputes, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said.
In a statement, the DOLE-National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB) said the settlements were achieved through voluntary dispute resolution mechanisms, averting work stoppages and maintaining industrial peace across the affected institutions.
At the University of Santo Tomas (UST), a dispute arose from unresolved provisions in the 2021–2026 collective bargaining agreement (CBA), including the delayed release of faculty shares from tuition fee increases between 2020 and 2023.
A notice of strike was filed by the faculty union on Mar. 25.
The issue was resolved on May 20, with around 1,700 faculty members set to receive a P294-million package—P220 million from tuition fee-related shares and P74.7 million in other benefits.
In the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERM), a similar impasse led to a Notice of Strike on Mar. 13 due to deadlock over 11 economic provisions, including salary adjustments, bonuses, and educational aid.
Conciliation efforts facilitated by NCMB led to a settlement on May 6, granting P42.4 million in benefits to 601 employees under the 2025–2027 CBA.
At Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila (LPU), the faculty union filed a Notice of Strike on Mar. 26 over a long-standing mandatory retirement policy in effect since 1978.
The policy was amended on Apr. 22 to allow voluntary retirement for employees under 50 years old with at least 20 years of service.
A settlement was finalized on Apr. 24, with 38 employees to receive a P4-million benefits package.
Meanwhile, at United Pulp and Paper Co., Inc. (UPPC), wage-related issues prompted workers to file a Notice of Strike on April 2.
Both parties reached a settlement on May 14, with 196 employees set to receive a P32.8-million package under a new CBA, which is expected to be signed in early June.
DOLE said these successful resolutions underscore the Marcos administration’s commitment to fostering industrial harmony through voluntary mechanisms, with the NCMB playing a key role in sustaining stable labor-management relations.
